Cardamom Production Increased, But Farmers Did Not Get A Fair Price

Although cardamom production has been increasing in the hilly areas of the district every year, it has not been able to get a fair price. Farmers, who are enthusiastic about cardamom, an important cash crop, are disappointed as they are not getting a fair price.

Although cardamom farmers in the hilly areas of the district have started to increase cardamom production due to the good price of cardamom, cardamom growers have become frustrated as they are not able to get a fair price as it is now. Cardamom, which used to be sold at Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500 per kg last year, is now priced at Rs 500 to Rs 800, which is likely to attract cardamom growers to other agricultural crops.

Farmers of Rauta, Bhutar, Pambu, Iname, Nametar, Tawashri, Saune Khambu, Andheri, Chhamling, Aaptar, Bahunitar, Sorung, Sirise, Hardeni and Mayankhu areas of the hilly region have not been able to get a fair price this year.

Bir Bahadur Rai, a cardamom grower of Aaptar in Rautamai Gaonpalika-5, complains that he has not been able to get a fair price for the cardamom he has been producing for several years. "In the past, the price of cardamom was good. I started cultivating cardamom for financial gain. I started to produce cardamom by taking loans in winter and rainy season, but I have been waiting for the price of cardamom since November. Now the price has come down to Rs 500 to Rs 800 per kg. Selling cardamom produced with grief, they are left with nothing but disappointment. ”

Panchaman Tamang of Tapli village Tawashri has complained that selling cardamom at the current price does not raise their financial investment and labor and does not even pay the wages of the workers working in the cardamom orchard. He says, "Instead, the price was Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per kg till Mangsir / Pus. Now, cardamom traders have reduced the price to Rs 500 to Rs 800 per kg. Now they have no choice but to burn cardamom."

Local cardamom buyers in Gaighat and Murkachi Bazaar, the district headquarters, have started complaining that the price of cardamom in the Itahari area of Biratnagar has come down.

Ram Bahadur Magar, a cardamom grower from Dumre, Udaipur Gadhi, says, “We used to cultivate cardamom after hearing that the price of cardamom would be sold at Rs 4,000 per kg. I am beginning to regret that I have been involved in farming. ”

Cardamom growers in Udayapur are now frustrated as the price of cardamom has been declining every year even though they used to cultivate cardamom commercially to earn a good income from cardamom production. According to Harkadhan Rai, a farmer of Rautamai Aaptar, many farmers were attracted to cardamom when the price was very good.

According to Rai, a farmer from Sankhuwasabha, Bhojpur, Khotang, said that he earns millions from selling cardamom every year. Rai complains that now that he has started producing cardamom up to Dashbora annually, it is difficult to sell it even at Rs 200,000 a year due to lack of price.

According to Suresh Sah, a cardamom buyer from Gaighat, most of the cardamoms in Nepal are imported to India through Biratnagar. Farmers of other hilly districts like Khotang, Sankhuwasabha, Panchthar and Ilam have been increasing their income from cardamom cultivation and sale for the last 10 years.

According to the District Agriculture Knowledge Center, commercial cardamom cultivation has started in more than 57 hectares of land in the hilly areas of the district. According to Narnath Regmi, Assistant Officer at the Agriculture Knowledge Center, cardamom has been cultivated in 29 hectares of land in the hilly areas of the district till four years ago but now it has expanded to 55 hectares.

According to the center, cardamom of Dambarsai, Golchhai and Ramsai varieties are mainly grown in the hilly areas of the district. The price of cardamom produced by the farmers is being fixed by some middlemen and traders and the farmers are in trouble as the people's representatives and the state are not paying attention to it.
