"There Have Been Rumors Of Infrastructure Companies In The Telecom Sector," Said Minister Gurung
"There Have Been Rumors Of Infrastructure Companies In The Telecom Sector," Said Minister Gurung.
The question of whether Nepal Telecom is a contractor company has been raised on Telecom. The government's attitude towards telecom has also pushed the company to expand the contract project rather than the telecom service provider.
Telecom, which has not been able to complete even the projects it has received, has started to get involved in the projects received by other companies. Two of the projects operated under the Rural Telecommunication Development Fund to build information highways and expand broadband network access in rural areas have been entrusted to two telecom companies.
Initially, Nepal Telecom had signed a project contract worth Rs 3.69 billion in Provinces 1, 2 and Bagmati. In Gandaki and Province No. 5, United Telecom Limited (UTL) had won the contract for the project at a cost of Rs 2.1 billion and in Karnali and Far Western Provinces, Smart Telecom had won the contract at a cost of Rs 2.79 billion.
The government canceled the agreement saying that Smart Telecom could not work on the project and decided to hand over the project to Telecom. Similarly, the government plans to give the project received by UTL to Nepal Telecom.
However, the issue of UTL is pending in the court. However, in the future, Nepal Telecom is sure to get. Not only that, but now Minister Gurung is seen with the intention of handing over the responsibility of telecommunication infrastructure company to Telecom.
Questioning the poor quality of service to the company, Minister Gurung directed the telco to be ready for the infrastructure company during the telecom's annual festival. That too with a plan to be the only such company in Nepal.
"There have been rumors of infrastructure companies in the telecom sector," said Minister Gurung. "There are rumors that two companies are needed." There is also a demand for a separate company from Internet service providers. But we want only one company. '
Its model is yet to be decided. However, he said that Nepal Telecom should be ready to move the infrastructure company forward and take the initiative.
Other service providers do not agree that Telecom, which is currently lagging behind in terms of building adequate infrastructure and providing services, should be the only infrastructure company to lead. With the conclusion that the telecommunication service is not effective, the government has issued regulations to form a separate company for telecommunication infrastructure.
In which it is mentioned that two separate companies will be brought for telecom co-use and the company will be given the responsibility of network expansion. Minister Gurung has started speaking openly saying that he is in favor of bringing only one company against the rules.
Not only that, the same provision was also made in the proposal submitted by NEA to the companies seeking permission for the construction of telecommunication infrastructure on November 3, 2008. Five companies had applied for the globally demanded application.
Among them were US company ATC Asia Pacific Pvt. Ltd., Lebanon-based Eye Engineering SAL, African company Blue Ocean Network Limited, Tillman Asia LLC and Malaysia's Osike Group Berhad.
After that, the authority also issued RFA. After studying the proposal received from them by purchasing the RFA, NEA also selected three companies for the final stage.
Among them were Eye Engineering SAL, which has an office in Lebanon, African company Blue Ocean Networks Limited and Tillman Asia LLC. NEA had sought financial and technical proposals from all the three companies.
The committee studied the proposal and submitted a report. A new committee was formed in coordination with the NEA board members to discuss the report.
Although the committee completed the study and took the proposal to the board a year ago, no decision has been taken by the board so far. However, Communications Minister Gurung has rejected both the regulations and the proposed proposal and has moved ahead to make Nepal Telecom a contractor company.
Thus, the company has not been able to focus on its own services when handing over one big project after another to the telco. Of course, all these projects are necessary for the expansion of telecommunication services, so it is also a necessary issue for telecom.
However, by saying that it is not working on the quality of the service it is providing and getting involved in the project, the telecom has started to analyze that this kind of emphasis of the Minister is not right even for itself.
