Tax Burden has made the Internet Expensive

Tax Burden has made the Internet Expensive

Experts have complained that the government has imposed high taxes on the Internet. Experts have said that the tax levied on internet in Nepal is too high and the tax should be removed to make it accessible to all. The government has put the Internet on the list of essential services. However, he suggested that the tax should be removed saying that the direct burden of the tax on the internet has fallen on the consumers.

Sudhir Parajuli, president of the Internet Service Providers Association of Nepal (ISPAN), said it was ironic that the government did not impose taxes on other essential commodities, but on the Internet. "Why not tax other essential services but the internet?" He asked. "The government is ready to make it more expensive by taxing the internet."

He said that the cost of internet has gone up even though there is no infrastructure for internet distribution. He accused the government of not complying with the request of internet service providers to open infrastructure companies and use the infrastructure. "What does the government want? We are confused," he said.

Vinay Bohara, Managing Director of Vinet Communications, who is also the former president of the Internet Service Providers Association, presented the fact that the tax on internet is high in Nepal. "Internet service is one of the most tax-exempt areas in Nepal," he said, adding that "service providers have to pay more than 50 percent tax on various titles."
