ISPAN's Memorandum To The Minister Said That The Price Of Internet Will Increase If The Rent Of Electricity Poles Is Not Reduced

The Internet Service Providers Association of Nepal (ISPAN), an umbrella organization of Internet service providers, has handed over a memorandum to Communications and Information Technology Minister Parbat Gurung, warning that the price of internet will go up if the rent of electric poles is not reduced.

Minister Gurung had for some time requested the internet service providers to suggest necessary steps for the implementation of Digital Nepal Framework and the steps to be taken by the government for that. Based on that, the service provider has submitted a memorandum with suggestions to the ministry.

"The Internet is the backbone of the implementation of the Digital Nepal Framework," the memorandum said, "so it is necessary to make the Internet universally accessible." It is mentioned in the memorandum that the Nepal Electricity Authority has increased the fare on its OPG fiber to Rs 32,000 per km excluding tax in a year, which is double than before.

It is mentioned in the letter that the Electricity Authority has unilaterally increased the rent of electricity poles without coordination with the internet service providers.

"It simply came to our notice then. At the same time, it has hit the internet service provider hard. The effect of which will be seen in the general consumer. This will make it difficult for citizens to access the internet, ”the statement said.

More importantly, it is creating a barrier to the government's drive to create a digital Nepal, he said. Therefore, ISPAN has demanded that the Nepal Electricity Authority should reduce the rate of fiber.

According to him, the Electricity Authority has suggested to the Minister to reduce the rent of fiber per kilometer per year to less than Rs 10,000.

They have also demanded Rs 250 per pole in the metropolis and sub-metropolis, Rs 150 per pole in the municipality and Rs 50 per pole in the village municipality.

He also called for a reduction in corporate taxes on the Internet. He also demanded that the corporate tax on alcohol and internet be reduced to 30 per cent. In a statement, ISPAN also suggested reducing the royalty amount from 4 percent to 2 percent and RTDF from 2 percent to 1 percent.
