5 GHz Band For Free WiFi
Nepal Telecom Authority is going to make 5 GHz band frequency available for free wifi. For that, NEA has recommended Radio Frequency Policy Determination Committee through the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
The NEA Board has recommended to the committee to designate the frequency band from 5.150 to 5.725 GHz (5 GHz band) as unlicensed (ISM) band so that it can be used on a share basis.
Earlier, the ISM band was 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz. NEA has stated that it is preparing to promote 5 GHz as an ISM band.
According to NEA spokesperson Min Prasad Aryal, the license band is up to 5.35 GHz. For the use of the band, the service provider must have received a license from the authority, and must pay a frequency fee.
However, it has been recommended to the committee with a plan to provide 5 GHz free of cost. The 5 GHz frequency band is also called a low-power device.
Aryal says, ‘The government has recommended this band so that you don't have to get a license and pay a frequency fee to promote the sector. For this, the committee has been recommended based on the conclusions drawn from the study of international practice.
The NEA's recommendation to the committee has set some conditions for the use of the band's frequency. In which the transmit power cannot be more than 4 watts at most. It is also mentioned that such ISM bands cannot be used in the backbone network.
