Government Plans To Regulate YouTube And Online Television
The government will regulate content on YouTube and online television. The Development Problem Solving Committee and the first quarterly review meeting of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology have taken the necessary process forward.
The Ministry has directed the Telecommunication Authority of Nepal and the Department of Information and Broadcasting to prepare procedures for this within two months. What about content from such platforms? What kind of content can be broadcast? It is said that the issues including what kind of content will be banned will be included in the working procedure.
Earlier, there was no monitoring of content broadcast on YouTube and online television. The ministry has started preparations to monitor the situation saying that it could spread corruption if left open.
The Ministry of Communications has also issued a circular in this regard in the name of NEA and the Department of Information and Broadcasting. NEA chairperson Purushottam Khanal also said that he has received a circular from the ministry.
However, Chairman Khanal said that the regulation of YouTube and online television does not fall under the jurisdiction of the authority. "The regulation of YouTube and online television is not within our jurisdiction," he said. However, NEA is ready to give necessary suggestions and assistance to the Department of Information and Broadcasting in formulating the working procedure.
